So, all we need to do it help people get over being so resistant, right?
Or we could identify why people are often resistant to change, and admit that resistance is often a reaction to the way a change is being led
This different way of thinking comes from Rick Maurer, who says “The people resisting don’t see what they are doing as resistance – they often see it as survival.”
The issue is more around how changes are being planned and executed, than resistance.
Maurer shares 3 levels of resistance and how to overcome them:
1. Level 1 – I DON’T GET IT
= People don’t understand the purpose of the change.
2. Level 2 – I DON’T LIKE IT
= People react emotionally & irrationally to the change.
3. Level 3 – I DON’T LIKE YOU
= People don’t trust you regardless of what you say.
See the comments for ways to manage each level.
From my experiences, there’s a lot of merit in these concepts.
We need to take responsibility for how change is planned and executed.
This can have an impact on the level of resistence, change adoption and sustainability.
