How do you know?
There are a couple of ways to check that the skills you are promoting are the ones in demand with employers.
First, check the job descriptions. Look for skills mentioned like critical thinking, decision making, or perhaps a technical skill. If you want some extra help identifying the skills, copy/paste the job description into Chat GPT and ask it to highlight the important skills based on the words used.
Second, research what skills are the most important in the broader marketplace and use these in your talking points. Leverage studies like the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report to see the currently important and rising in importance skills.
Once you have a list of skills to promote, think of ways you have developed and demonstrated these skills. Think of stories about when you used critical thinking to solve a problem or when you were innovative and showed creativity. use these stories in your interviews.
Incorporate the same skills used in the job description into your cover letter and resume so the computerized applicant tracking systems (ATS) will highlight you are someone to talk with.
These simple activities will help to get you noticed and lead to better interview conversations.
