According the William Bridges, there is a difference and the transition comes before the change. He talks about this in his book “Transitions: Making sense of life’s changes”.

Change is an event, situation, or milestone that takes place – a delivered system, a new team, or a signed contract.

Transition on the other hand is the psychological process people go through as they internalize how their situation will change as a result of the change.

Project Managers should consider the following to better support people as they move through transitions:

👉 Recognize that transitions are a normal part of the change process.
👉 Communicate clearly about why the change is necessary.
👉 Work to understand the impact the change will have, and on who.
👉 Address people’s fears, uncertainty, and doubts and support them during the change.
👉 Audit the readiness for the change and address areas of concern.
👉 Foster a positive and supportive work environment for smooth transitions.

Are you managing changes, transitions, or both?
