The Iceberg Model from IDEO is helpful for mapping out the layers of a problem.
This helps to dig deeper and better understand the problem before we begin solving it.
Layer 1 – Focus on what you can see. Events & Behaviors. See what’s happening and look for relationships between events.
Many people stop here. Don’t.
Layer 2 – Focus on the underlying structures. Processes, policies, tools. How are these related to the problem? These are often the causes of the problems.
More people stop there. Don’t.
Layer 3 – Surface relevant mindsets. Our beliefs, values, and assumptions. These direct and drive our behaviors and are often the root of the problem. You need to shift mindsets to create lasting change.
Better definition of problems results in better problem solving.
P.S. Have you heard of the Iceberg model previously?
