How do design thinking (and human-centered design) relate to workshopping, and agility? These are all compliments to each other to promote innovation.

They can be used together to help develop new ideas, test new ideas, integrate ideas from multiple people, and then prototype ideas to vet them for viability, feasibility, and desirability. Beyond ideas, the can all help solve problems, make decisions, and develop consensus-based plans & strategies.

What does each bring to the table? Agility brings the inspect & adapt mindset. Design thinking brings collaborative exercises & tools. Workshopping (and facilitation) brings the process to follow and principles for execution. Although these are often used independently, combining these may 5X or10X your outcomes.

The three best practices to successfully implement this at a company or organization are:

  1. Train a dedicated team of process facilitators to lead this effort. Alternatively, you could hire an external consultant with these skills.
  2. Start small with a team challenge or opportunity. Don’t try to roll this out across your entire company right off the bat. Crawl, Walk, Run.
  3. Expect that this will take time. Successful adoption of something new takes time. Create a roadmap for direction and then regularly update it based on new discoveries and learning.
