It’s a balancing act to have the right discussions that result in the¬†desired outcomes. Trying to fit 5 lbs. of stuff into a 3 lb. bag will only end up with a mess and a lot of stuff on the floor.

Here are 5 ways to prevent adding too much into a meeting or workshop.

1. Keep people’s energy in mind and build in breaks. People can only focus for so long.
2. Remember to include time for instructions, examples, the activities, wrap-up, and the transition to the next activity.
3. Think about the audience and their experience. Leave more time if this is their first time doing the exercises.
4. Walkthrough the exercise in your mind and think of what could go wrong. Then build in plans to keep it on track.
5. Ask a trained facilitator or trusted advisor to review the plans and provide their feedback on timing.
