It may be time to admit that resistance is often a reaction to the way a change is being led.

According to Rick Maurer, “The people resisting don’t see what they are doing as resistance – they often see it as survival.”

The issue may be more around how changes are being planned and executed, than difficult resisting.

Maurer shares 3 levels of resistance and how to address them:

1. Level 1 – I DON’T GET IT
= People don’t understand the purpose of the change.

2. Level 2 – I DON’T LIKE IT
= People react emotionally & irrationally to the change.

3. Level 3 – I DON’T LIKE YOU
= People don’t trust you regardless of what you say.

From my experiences, there’s a lot of merit in these concepts.

We need to take responsibility for how change is planned and executed.

We need that share a clear vision of the future state, a clear explanation of what the change is and why it’s being made.

We need to listen better to understand when people don’t like the change to understand why as d then address their concerns.

We need to find people to lead the change that are highly trusted and have successfully led change initiatives in the past.

Once after addressing the three things can address the 3 levels of resistance.
