Let’s imagine your company has implemented a new payroll system.
People are struggling to adopt new behaviors that are required in the process (i.e. track daily hours, and submit them on a timely basis).
Change Managers shouldn’t tackle the big, historical, organizational problems impacting the adoption.
These are too big and you will likely be fighting an uphill battle beyond the time and money in the budget.
Instead, focus of the bright spots where people have made the change and are successfully using the new system.
The Bright Spots concept of finding something that’s working and doing more of it, comes from the book Switch, by the brothers Chip & Dan Heath I’m reading.
This needs to replace the concept of finding what’s broken and fixing it.
We need to move from problem solving to a solutions focus when it comes to organizational change management.
One last quote from the book: “ These flashes of success – these bright spots – can illuminate the roadmap for action and spark hope that change is possible”.
Great book. I highly recommend it.
Have you seen more problems solving or solutions focused organizations when it comes to managing change?
